Art And Scripture

DAY 2 OF 9

“Your Word Exposes and Judges” [Illustrations included in this devotional are not visible in this view. Illustrations are only supported in the Bible App for iOS, Android, and at Bible.com] Notes From Jessica Jones About the Painting: In this devotion series we combine Art with Bible reading. We would encourage you as the reader to mediate on the art as you do the verses. Art has a way of stirring up questions, depth of meaning, and interpretative elements about Biblical texts that often go overlooked. In our culture, we are so overwhelmed by images each and everyday. We’ve lost the ability to understand the gift God gives us through the artist. Artists can make “visible the invisible,” and help us tangibly contemplate Faith (the evidence of things unseen). Use the artist’s notes below to help you interpret the passage as well as the painting. We pray this study helps you grow in your maturity as a disciple of Christ, but also in your ability to enjoy, revel in, and feast your senses on all of God’s creation—His artwork! 1\. In Hebrews 4:2 the Word of God is described. The Yellow/Gold background reflects God’s glory in His Word. 2\. The Word is also living and active and so the painting is full of energy. 3\. The Word is sharper than a two-edged sword. It pierces and divides, soul, spirit, joints, and marrow. There’s a scalpel that’s dimly visible coming in from right side. It cuts into the artery-vein-like image. 4\. There is blood and marrow textures and images all around. A few transparent and faint joint images are shown in the top half. 5\. The Word discerns our heart’s thoughts and intentions. The heart-like image is the largest piece of painting. 6\. Textures and images reminiscent of neurons and brain tissue scattered around point to thoughts and intentions as they travel around inside of us.
