Invitations (S1-E7)

DAY 4 OF 4

Will you follow me?

In The Chosen, Jesus invites Nicodemus to follow Him. The moment is full of tension. Nicodemus wants to say yes, but his mind races with doubts: I’m part of the Sanhedrin. I have a family. I’m too old.

Jesus listens with compassion but simply replies, “I understand. But the invitation still stands.”

It’s the same invitation we see in Mark 10. A rich young man runs up to Jesus, eager and sincere, asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. When Jesus tells him to sell his possessions and follow, the man’s face falls. He walks away sad, unwilling to let go.

Both Nicodemus and the rich man face the same question: Will you follow Me?

Following Jesus often feels costly. It means surrendering control, comfort, or identity; letting go of the things that define or protect us. Like Nicodemus, we might wonder: What will it cost me? What if I lose too much?

But Jesus’ answer never changes: What you gain is much greater.

The call to follow Him isn’t about deprivation. It’s about transformation. What we release, He replaces with something richer: purpose, peace, and a share in His Kingdom. We stop clinging to what we think will make us secure and discover the freedom of trusting God instead.

When the disciples ask who can possibly live this way, Jesus answers, “With man this is impossible, but not with God. All things are possible with God.”

That promise still holds. Whatever holds you back—fear, doubt, comfort, or control—Jesus’ invitation remains: Follow Me.

Reflection Questions

  • Who do you identify with more: Nicodemus or the rich young man?
  • Do you believe that what you gain from following Jesus is greater than what you leave behind?
  • How does the promise “With God all things are possible” give you courage today?
  • What stops you from following Jesus?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You still call me to follow You. Help me to release whatever keeps me from saying yes. Teach me to trust that what I gain in You is far greater than anything I leave behind. Amen.
