Abiding in the Psalms

DAY 3 OF 63

Highs and lows My best friend and I have been friends for 8 years now and we have had some highs and some lows. I know her really well. I know that she is kind and caring, she is generous and forgiving, I know what her café order is, and I could name every crush she has had over the past 8 years. However, there have been times when we have hurt each other, times where we didn’t speak for months, times when it felt like we may never be the same again. Yet, I always knew who she was. I always knew her character even though sometimes we both messed up. Here David is proclaiming his love for God, “I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold”. However, if we look in the previous Psalm (Psalm 17) we see David pleading with God to save him from his enemies. In both the highs and the lows, David knew who his God was, he knew His character and His unchanging and never-ceasing love. Sometimes when we are going through a low we can feel as though God has abandoned us, but we see through Psalm 17 (v3a “Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me”) and 18 (v3 “I have called to the Lord who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies” … v6 “from his temple he heard my voice”), that through the highs and lows, God has never left our side. Although God is our friend, he is unlike any other and will never fail us. Questions When you are going through highs, who do you lean on? When you are going through lows, who do you lean on? Is who/what you lean on the same? Why? Pray Heavenly Father, when things are going well I feel …… towards you. But when things are going badly I feel like …….. Help me to know that you will never leave me, and you will never give up on me even when I try and push you away. Amen.
