Abiding in the Psalms

DAY 28 OF 63

Have faith The man in verse 14 approached Jesus with a huge request. His son was unwell in a way that no one could understand or control – he would have seizures, and would fall into fire and into water. This man needed help, and it looked like he had run out of options. It would have taken him a lot of courage to approach Jesus. Verse 15 says that he’d already tried having Jesus’ disciples heal his son but they could not heal him. He’d already tried, already experienced disappointment, already been reminded how out of his control it was. But still, he approached Jesus, he knelt before him, and he asked “Lord, have mercy on my son”. And Jesus spoke, the demon that was possessing the boy left, and the boy was healed. The focus then shifts to the disciples, who couldn’t work out why they weren’t able to heal the boy. Jesus told them it was a lack of faith, because nothing is impossible if you have faith in Jesus. How can we have this faith in Jesus? Because He is God’s son (v5), because during His time on earth he worked for God the Father, and because He continues to work now through His Holy Spirit. This means you can pray, and have faith that He has power over even the biggest things that are beyond your control. So often it’s only when you’ve exhausted every other option to solve something yourself, just like the man in this passage, that you then go to Jesus, desperate. It turns out He is the only one who can solve what we need, and He should be the first place we turn. What are the things that feel out of your control, and that you need to ask Jesus to help with? Pray “Jesus, I’ve held onto this so tight and tried to fix it myself, but I realise now you are the only one who can heal, fix, or resolve this. So right now, I give you full control over………(tell Jesus the biggest things you’ve been holding onto) Amen.
