See No Evil

DAY 7 OF 15

Growing up, my family didn’t have much money. So we never made choices like . . . ·  Where should we go eat tonight? ·  Where should we go on vacation? We ate whatever was on sale at the grocery store, and we vacationed at grandma’s house. But when I graduated from high school, a bunch of people gave me money as a graduation gift. I was NOT expecting that! All of a sudden, I had more cash in my pocket than I ever had. But within two weeks, I spent it all. What did I buy? No clue. I can’t remember. (I do remember taking a bunch of trips to Taco Bell, though!) But whatever I bought, it was MY choice. Once the money was gone, however, the choices were gone. And so were my trips to Taco Bell. Scripture tells us that we are born with freedom. We are free to choose what we think, believe, and care about. But just like me with a whole bunch of graduation money, those choices can be good or bad. This is how the apostle Paul talks about it: For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love (Galatians 5:13 NLT). Paul’s like, “You’re free to choose. So choose something better!” Like what? Well, Paul starts by telling us to serve one another in love. So what’s one choice you could make today or tomorrow to serve someone else? You’re smart—I know you can come up with something! Ask God to give you the courage to follow through on that one choice.
