I Remember Your Tears

Paul wrote, “As I remember your tears . . .” (2 Tm. 1:4 ESV). His prayers for Timothy were fervent, sincere, and unceasing. Do you ever feel weak, lame, or unable to lift your head? Perhaps this describes you now.

Timothy’s tears remind us to cling to the Lord, amidst our sorrow and grief, knowing that we are not alone. Even when it feels impossible and the weight of the world seems to be on our shoulders, we can bring all of our sorrows and burdens to the Lord. Life’s difficulties, disappointments, and tragedies can arouse a tumult of emotions. The fierce opposition to the gospel and fear of imprisonment or death, not to mention the impending death of Paul, would stir up all kinds of emotions for Timothy. We all face many trials and tribulations, though perhaps not imprisonment for our faith. Still, God wants us to first come to Him and then to a close Christian friend or mentor to express our emotions and fears in a godly manner, rather than suppressing or ignoring them.

Trusting in God and choosing to believe that He sovereignly rules over everything for the praise of His glory does not rule out lamenting over the sinfulness and brokenness of this world. It is legitimate and even reasonable for us to express deep sadness, lament, inquiry, discouragement, disappointment, fearfulness, and faintheartedness when our path leads us through difficulty. As you face such emotions, cry out to God. He does not forsake His people. He does not sneer at your pain or disdain your tears. Indeed, “the LORD is near to the brokenhearted” (Ps. 34:18 ESV).

When we have laid our sorrows and burdens before the Lord, we can follow Paul’s example and sing praises and give thanks to Him. Paul encouraged the Philippians to “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Phil. 4:4 ESV). He also exhorted the Thessalonians to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:16-18 ESV).

Are you brokenhearted? Sorrowful? Lay your burdens before the Lord in your note-taking app. Turn to the Lord and rejoice in Him who loves you: the One who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Remember, He is always with you and will strengthen you by His grace.

Strengthened by Grace

Paul is in dire circumstances, yet remains unwavering in his faith. While writing to Timothy from prison, he encourages him to draw strength from the grace found only in Christ. Paul reminds Timothy—and all of us—that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. May this plan from 2 Timothy chapters 1-3 inspire and strengthen you as you seek to remain steadfast and guard the gospel.
