ДЗЕНЬ 6 З 30

Night and Day

2 Timothy 1:3-4 ESV: I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy.

Alone, isolated, and abandoned, Paul is not focusing on himself and the what-ifs, calling himself a failure, or dwelling on the end that seems near. Day and night, Paul is praying specifically for Timothy. One theologian writes, “Paul’s affection for Timothy is expressed not only in words but in prayer and remembrance, showing how precious godly friendships are in Christ. Such love springs not from the flesh but from grace, and it binds hearts in Christ Jesus more powerfully than any natural bond." In his solitude, Paul fellowships with the Lord through prayer and through writing to Timothy and other saints. He is practicing what he knows to be true and what he has preached.

As Paul thanks God, he earnestly connects with his covenant God and with his beloved son in the faith, Timothy. This is true Christian fellowship and discipleship in the body of Christ. Our current culture exalts the self by promoting self-focus and self-protection. Even believers are often caught up in the selfishness of the age. It profoundly impacts our faith and communion with God and one another.

Meditating on 2 Timothy 1:3-4 can help us be more intentional in our pursuit of righteousness and communion with God and others. Consider making a list of family, friends, pastors, and elders.

Take a moment to write a brief prayer asking the Lord to help you make an earnest commitment to pray for those God has placed in your life and for those in your local church.

Today’s devotion is shorter to leave a little extra time to pray.

Strengthened by Grace

Paul is in dire circumstances, yet remains unwavering in his faith. While writing to Timothy from prison, he encourages him to draw strength from the grace found only in Christ. Paul reminds Timothy—and all of us—that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. May this plan from 2 Timothy chapters 1-3 inspire and strengthen you as you seek to remain steadfast and guard the gospel.
