Toe dit by die farao uitkom, wou hy vir Moses laat doodmaak, maar Moses het van hom af weggevlug en in Midian gaan woon. Terwyl hy daar by 'n put sit, het die sewe dogters van 'n priester van Midian kom water skep om die drinkbakke vol te maak en hulle pa se kleinvee te laat suip. Toe daar veewagters aankom en die dogters wegjaag, het Moses opgestaan en hulle gehelp en hulle kleinvee laat suip. Met hulle aankoms by hulle pa Reüel het hy gevra: “Hoe het julle dan vandag so gou gekom?” en hulle antwoord: “Daar was 'n Egiptenaar, en hy het ons gehelp teen die veewagters. Boonop het hy vir ons water geskep en die kleinvee laat suip.” Toe vra die priester vir sy dogters: “Waar is hy? Waarom het julle die man daar laat staan? Gaan nooi hom huis toe om by ons te kom eet.”
