Voor Hy nog kon begin, val Petrus weg: “Here, wil U nou regtig my voete staan en was?” “Petrus, dit mag nou vir jou snaaks lyk dat Ek so iets wil doen,” sê Jesus, “maar gee ’n bietjie kans; al hierdie dinge sal wel later vir jou sin begin maak.” “Moet asseblief nie aan my voete raak nie,” vra Petrus, “nie nou nie en ook nie later nie.” “Wel,” antwoord Jesus hom, “as Ek nie jou voete was nie, beteken dit dat jy nie een van ons is nie. Dan gaan jy ook nie kry wat Ek vir jou kan gee nie.” “Here, as dit die geval is, moet dan asseblief nie by my voete stop nie. Was my hande; was my kop - sommer alles!” Jesus sê toe: “Jy het mos vanoggend gebad. Dit is nou eers genoeg om net jou voete te was; dan is jy weer heeltemal skoon. Maar nie almal van julle sal skoon word nie, al was Ek almal se voete.”
