This Wasn’t the Plan

Devotional:

I don’t know if you’ve ever had one of those “This is not how I thought it would go” moments—but I’ve had a few. You step out with good intentions. You trust God. You do the right thing. And then things get worse. It makes you wonder if you missed it, or if God went silent.

Most of us have moments like that—where life turns in a direction we didn’t expect. A relationship falls apart. A job disappears. A plan that once made sense suddenly feels pointless. And when that happens, it’s easy to start doubting: Did I mess up? Did God forget me?

Joseph had one of those moments—actually, a lot of them. His brothers didn’t just roll their eyes at his dream. They threw him into a pit and sold him to strangers (Genesis 37:18–28). He went from being the favoured son to a slave in a foreign country. No explanation. No rescue. Just a hard left turn into a life he never saw coming.

But here’s what we see in Joseph’s story: God didn’t disappear. In fact, one of the most powerful lines in Genesis keeps showing up—“The Lord was with Joseph” (Genesis 39:2). Even in slavery. Even in prison. Even when everything looked like failure.

God’s presence isn’t proof that everything will go to plan. It’s proof that you’re not alone when things don’t.

Maybe you’re facing something right now that doesn’t make sense. Maybe your life looks nothing like what you prayed for. That doesn’t mean God has left. Sometimes the pit is part of the process. Not because God causes every hard thing—but because He knows how to use it.

So don’t give up just because it’s confusing. Don’t write off the story just because this chapter is hard. You’re not stuck. You’re being shaped.

Reflection Question:

Where do you feel like life has taken a turn you didn’t expect—and how might God still be with you in it?

Prayer:

God, I didn’t expect this. But I believe You’re still here. Help me see that even when plans fall apart, You’re still at work in my life. I trust that You’re with me, even when it doesn’t look like it. Amen.
