‘And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.’ Genesis 2:25 (ESV)

The family unit is something that was created by God. Here we see God’s design for relationships and how they should be: living in perfect harmony with each other and with God. In this story, we see Adam and Eve reap the devastating consequences of their actions. Their perfect relationship with each other and with God was fractured when Adam blamed his wife for his actions, which would’ve angered her and caused her to lose trust in him.

‘Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil.’ Genesis 3:22 (ESV)

Instead of trusting that God would guide them along straight paths of righteousness all the days of their life because his definition of good and evil is infallible, they chose to decide for themselves what is good and what is evil. We see this play out every day of our lives, both in our personal spheres and in the world at large. People’s definition of good and evil is always changing. During the existence of the Nazi regime, the vast majority of people in Europe believed that the ethnic cleansing of the Jewish people was morally correct. ‘The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?’ Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV). Our hearts are deceitful, so we can’t rely on our hearts to help us decide whether something is good or evil.

Question:

Is there something or someone else other than God that you rely on when deciding whether something is right or wrong? If you were honest with yourself, do you think this other source can be trusted when making decisions that have serious ramifications?
