‘But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)

Most adults judge people based on how they look on the outside, whether that be what ethnic group they appear to be from or what clothes they’re wearing. Here in 1 Samuel, we’re told that God is not like that. If he were like Samuel and the rest of us, he would’ve chosen one of David’s brothers to be king because they were more attractive and muscular than he was, but God saw David’s heart. Speaking of David, God said, “But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” 1 Samuel 13:14 (ESV). He knew that David was completely devoted to him and desired to honour his name through everything he did. This was the man who was to lead his people in righteousness. Ask God to help you see people the way he does, rather than look at their physical appearance and make conclusions based on that. Ask them questions to get to know them better. For it is only when we behave like Jesus that we can truly say we are his people.

Question:

What is a way by which you can practically live out seeing a person the way God sees them?
