Jesus is good news because he saves creation from the powers of evil. Jesus's redemption plan is not a retreat, grabbing souls for heaven. It's a reconquest. Earth will not be abandoned to evil and suffering forever. Jesus will return and make all things new, joining heaven and earth together and raising the dead. Our hope for the future is not a disembodied afterlife, but resurrection.

This incredible vision was given to John to encourage a persecuted church. In the present, we suffer. In the present, it appears that the evil powers are having their way. But in the future, there will be vindication and the victory of the cross will be applied to everyone who believes, and to the world we live in.

Part of our problem is the evil spirits who oppress our world. Jesus will throw them into the fiery lake. The other part of our problem is the evil within our own hearts. If we are not freed from this evil, we share the fate of the evil spirits. But if we turn to Jesus for mercy, we can look forward to a perfect eternity with our Lord.
