Introduction

1 Samuel 17:1–11: The Philistine army prepares once again to attack the Israelites. Earlier, God had saved the Israelites and the Philistines were defeated (see 1 Samuel 14:16–23). Goliath, a Philistine, who is over nine feet tall, offers a challenge to fight an Israeli soldier in one-on-one combat. The result of that fight will determine the battle.

Today’s Key Verse: 1 Samuel 17:4a

A man named Goliath, from the city of Gath, came out from the Philistine camp to challenge the Israelites.

Reflect

How are Goliath and his armor described (verses 4–7)? What does he say to the Israeli army (verses 8–10)? How do the Israelites react (verse 11)?

Lord God, in whatever challenges I may face today, I know that you are with me, strengthening me and guiding my thoughts and actions. Thank you for surrounding me with your steadfast love and care. Amen.
