Introduction

1 Samuel 16:1–23: Saul had been anointed as Israel’s first king (see 1 Samuel 9:1—10:27), but God has now rejected Saul as king. God now instructs the prophet Samuel to anoint David, a young shepherd boy, to be Israel’s next king. Saul is tormented by an evil spirit, and David is sent to play his harp for Saul. Saul enlists David in his service as his weapons carrier.

Today’s Key Verse: 1 Samuel 16:13a

Samuel took the olive oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. Immediately, the spirit of the LORD took control of David and was with him from that day on.

Reflect

How was David selected to be anointed as Israel’s next king? What does the passage show about the movement of God’s spirit? Saul may have been suffering from depression or a similar illness. The passage tells us that this illness was sent by God. Why does David’s harp playing make Saul feel better? When or where have you experienced the effects of soothing music?

Pray

Lord God, calm any fears I may be experiencing today, and fill me with your gentle spirit. Trusting in your care, I rest safely in your love. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

1 Samuel 17:1–11: A Philistine giant challenges the Israelites.
