The incomprehensibility of God’s infinity

When you start to study God, you quickly realise that the task ahead of you is way too big. You get the feeling that what you are attempting to do isn't possible, and you are quite right. God's infinity complicates any attempt by man to study Him.

However, studying the infinity of God is most rewarding. It will provide you with practical, real-life answers to many questions that you may be struggling with. When you truly grapple with God’s infiniteness — the fact that He has no limits, no boundaries, and no end — your understanding of Him can no longer be organised into human categories. You stop worshipping a “manageable deity” and begin standing in awe of the One who is beyond comprehension.

We need to be careful not to “defend” God by hiding everything we do not understand about Him and then using His infinity as a reason and excuse. When we lack understanding of what God is saying to us in Scripture, we must not use our lack of understanding of God's infinity as an excuse to study what the Word says about this subject. Many things that are hard to comprehend can only be explained by the fact that God is infinite. However, the truth is that when we study God's infinity and practically apply it to our lives, we will begin to grow spiritually in an unprecedented way.

Do not study God’s infinity as an academic subject, but in a way that touches your emotions, changes your relationship with God, and helps you grow in intimacy with Him.

As humans, we can only have a limited understanding of God's infinity. The reason for this is that we are finite, and what is finite cannot comprehend anything infinite. This is also true of the angels, who have been standing in God’s presence for millions of years. Angels are created beings. They are therefore finite. They do not know everything; they are limited. Even in heaven, we will not fully understand God because He is infinite.

On the contrary, if we study God as He reveals Himself in the Scriptures and understand something of His infiniteness, it will lead us into a much deeper relationship with Him — a place of intensified worship, wonder, adoration, trust, and surrender.

I think one of the main reasons why we struggle to find the words to describe our relationship with God, to share our knowledge of Him and to define theological dogmas, is because of His infinity. We do not have enough words, emotions, insight, and knowledge to describe God’s vastness, unlimitedness, and endlessness.
