Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living. Paul reports that the unexamined life might cost your life. The Corinthians are admonished to scrutinize their lives and confess any known sin before participating in communion. Apparently, some of the saints didn’t follow this principle. That is why Paul writes, “For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep [have died]” (1 Corinthians 11:30). The Lord’s Table is to be treated with the utmost respect. As the body of Christ gathers for the memorial of Jesus’ death, a time of self-examination should precede this ordinance. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” writes John (1 John 1:9).
