## House Churches - An Introduction The New Testament tells us in many places that God works with His people through the church. When the early Apostles and disciples first spread the gospel, they established churches in each of the places they visited. As evidence of this, we see that most of Paul's letters were written to churches, not individuals. In addition, the book of Revelation, or at least the first several chapters, was written to the seven churches in Asia. All of this points to the fact that God’s way of dealing with people is through the church. We are encouraged by the scriptures to meet as a church, and doing so has many benefits and blessings. “…and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25) But in recent years, church attendance has fallen away. Surveys and anecdotes have reported that many people have left the churches during COVID-19 and beyond. They have not given up on their faith, but for one reason or another, they have ceased to meet as a church. This is a tragedy, as the scripture above instructs us not to stand alone. We need the members of the body of Christ for support, encouragement, spiritual learning, and more. Like an animal that leaves the herd and becomes easy prey for predators, so too, when we try to stand as individuals in Christ, we become easy prey for the devil to attack us. But when we stand together, united as a church, we are strong, as this verse tells us: And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken. (Ecclesiastes 4:12) It is not good to stand alone. But if, for some reason, you cannot or choose not to meet with a “traditional” church, then there is another option. You might consider establishing or joining a house church to gain the strength and benefits of meeting as a church. As we will see in the next sections, it is both a viable and acceptable option biblically. Call to Action: If you are not part of a church for any reason, consider a house church. Consider seeking one out locally or even establishing your own with family and like-minded friends because God works with churches.
