DAG 3 AV 10

More Than Enough If I just had a bigger house. If I just had that new car. If I just got one more promotion. When is enough, enough? The truth is, nothing is enough. No possession will satisfy us enough. No title will make us qualified enough. No change to our outward appearance will make us worthy enough of love. We can keep striving, keep reaching, keep searching, keep buying, keep losing, and keep trying—but we were not designed to be satisfied with any of those things. Do you ever feel like the disciples in the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand? They had followed Jesus for months, learned from his teachings, and watched him heal the sick right in front of them. That same day, they saw the vast crowd and knew they couldn’t possibly feed them themselves. They didn’t possibly have enough food nor did they have nearly enough money to buy enough food. But, a boy came forward with two fish and five small loaves of bread. Jesus took it, broke it, blessed it, and performed a miracle: The two fish and five small loaves fed and satisfied five thousand men as well as hundreds of women and children, with baskets and baskets left over. They all ate and were satisfied. Luke 9:17 Our “not enough” only becomes enough when we bring it to Jesus, he blesses it, breaks it, and makes it enough. We see the greatest display of this on the cross. Our sin separates us from God and gives us the penalty of death. Only perfection gives us eternal life and connection to our God. We are imperfect people. We aren’t enough. God comes down from heaven in the person of Jesus, is blessed by God the Father, broken, and put to death on a cross in our stead, and He. Is. Enough. He is more than enough. God, there is a gap between what I have and what I want and I too often attempt to fill that gap in order to make myself happy. I pray for discernment, that when I am tempted to reach for the thing I want that I would realize it is you and you alone that stands in the gap. I don’t need "that thing" or "that situation." I need you and I have you, and that is more than enough for me. Amen.
