The Heart of Transformation

DAG 4 AV 5

King David was one of the most important and central characters to the story of Jesus. He was a man after God’s own heart, and was one of the most powerful and influential kings in history. King David was not a perfect man. In fact, he was incredibly flawed. Like Jonah, David knew when he messed up, and he repented. However, unlike Jonah, we see David’s confession is with a contrite heart and a broken spirit. In Psalm 51, after David has an affair with Bathsheba, he publicly confesses his sin and repents, committing to the work of repenting and changing the sin that was revealed in his heart. Both men were obedient, but only David had a broken spirit. God used both men to do the great works he had planned for them, and both men repented, but only one committed to the heart work of transformation. We have the opportunity, as individuals and as The Church, to change our behavior, but we also have the opportunity to allow the work of transformation to change our hearts. Questions: 1\. Have you been modifying your behavior because you feel it’s the right thing to do, but haven’t committed to changing your heart? Identify ways that you have responded like Jonah and ways you have responded like David. Take inventory of your heart to see if there are areas where you still need transformation.
