När Josefs bröder tänkte på att deras far var borta sade de: »Kanske Josef hyser agg till oss och vill ge igen för allt ont vi har gjort honom.« Därför skickade de bud till Josef och lät säga: »Innan han dog bad din far att vi skulle säga till dig: ’Vi ber dig förlåta oss, dina bröder, vår synd och skuld. Vi har gjort dig mycket ont.’ Så förlåt oss, din fars Guds tjänare, den synd vi har begått!« Vid dessa ord brast Josef i gråt. Sedan kom också bröderna själva och föll ner inför honom och sade: »Vi är dina slavar.« Men Josef sade till dem: »Var inte rädda. Jag är ju inte Gud! Ni ville mig ont, men Gud har vänt det till något gott. Han ville göra det som nu har skett och därigenom bevara många människor vid liv. Var inte rädda, jag skall sörja för er och era barn.« Så talade han lugnande och uppmuntrande till dem.
