Why Is This Happening?

Have you ever wondered why something is occurring in your life? Maybe an event seems out of character with your devotion to God and to your family. Yet God always has a plan.

God’s calling on Rebekah’s life was clear, so it is no surprise that she went straight to Him when she didn’t understand what was happening with her unborn children. When Abraham’s son, Isaac, was forty years old, Abraham sent his servant to find a godly wife for him rather than choosing a pagan woman from the surrounding countryside. Abraham’s servant asked God to make his choice for Isaac’s wife clear. God answered the servant’s prayer, and Rebekah was shown to be God’s chosen wife for Isaac.

After they were married, Rebekah was unable to have children. Isaac prayed for her, and God answered again, blessing Rebekah with a pregnancy. Over time, Rebekah felt that whatever was occurring in her womb was not right. She was uncomfortable because her twins were painfully warring within her.

The brothers’ personalities were developed before they were ever born. The firstborn Esau, who should have inherited nearly everything from Isaac, was careless and nonchalant about his role as the eldest brother and family heir. Jacob, later called Israel, was deceptive, cunning, and determined to take his brother’s position. Indeed, when Rebekah asked God why she was suffering, the Lord shared that there were two separate nations, or people groups, fighting in her womb. One would be stronger than the other, and the oldest would serve the youngest.

Life is often quite unpredictable. It is not unusual, even when you belong to Jesus, to wonder why something is occurring in your life. Because you know that God plans the events of your life, you can absolutely go to Him as Rebekah did and ask, “Why is this happening to me?”

Pray: Lord, help me always to come straight to You when I question the events of my life. Thank You for the story of Rebekah, in which I clearly see Your hand guiding her life. Please help me understand why this thing is happening to me. Please give me peace and help me trust You with all my heart. I don’t want to depend on my own understanding. I want to seek Your will in all that I do, knowing You will show me the right direction to go.
