Ask God for Wisdom

Have you ever found yourself paralyzed by indecision? Maybe you tend to head decisively down a path, only to question later whether you made a mistake. Perhaps when you read the Bible, you wonder how it applies to your own life. Thankfully, God gives wisdom generously.

The word wisdom in the Bible is not just used to indicate knowledge of God and His Word. Wisdom is also the application of that knowledge, the ability to put what you know into practice. In the beginning of the book of Proverbs, King Solomon writes that the proverbs exist to teach people wisdom and discipline.

As followers of Jesus, we want to know God’s wisdom, and we desire to understand His Word. We also need to be able to apply God’s Word to our lives so that we can live with insight, righteousness, justice, and equity.

In his letter to believers, James tells us that if we find that we lack wisdom in any way, we should go straight to God and ask Him to give it to us. We do this knowing that God answers our prayers because of His character rather than ours. God is generous and gives to all without reproach. This means that no matter how foolish we have been in the past, God won’t criticize us when we come to Him to ask for wisdom. Instead, He will give it to us.

James also tells us how we should approach God to ask for wisdom. We must ask in faith, believing in God and His attributes, rather than showing faith in our own ability to have faith. We do not have to hope that we have gathered up enough faith, as one gathers courage to do something truly difficult. Instead, we only have to trust that God is exactly who He says He is. The longer you know God and the more you learn about Him through Scripture, the more He will show you that His character is true.

Pray: Dear God, You give generously to all without criticism or reproach. I need wisdom. I want to know who You are and to understand Your will for believers. Please help me apply that knowledge to my life so that I can live to Your glory. I believe You can do all things, and I trust You. Please take away any doubt that hides in my heart. Amen.
