Na sześć dni przed Paschą Jezus przyszedł do Betanii, gdzie mieszkał Łazarz, którego wzbudził z martwych. Tam też przygotowali Mu ucztę. Marta usługiwała, a Łazarz był jednym z tych, którzy wraz z Nim spoczywali przy stole. Maria natomiast wzięła funt czystego, bardzo drogiego olejku nardowego, namaściła stopy Jezusa i wytarła je swoimi włosami. Wówczas dom wypełnił się zapachem perfum. A Judasz Iskariot, jeden z Jego uczniów, ten, który miał Go wydać, powiedział: Dlaczego nie sprzedano tych perfum? Można by za nie uzyskać sumę trzystu denarów i rozdać pieniądze ubogim. Powiedział to nie z troski o ubogich, lecz dlatego, że był złodziejem. A ponieważ opiekował się sakiewką, podkradał z tego, co do niej wkładano. Jezus odpowiedział: Zostaw ją! Zachowała to na dzień mojego pogrzebu.
