Day 5 – Compassion Sends Us Out

Scripture: Matthew 9:35–38

Devotional:
Jesus travelled from town to town, teaching, healing, and proclaiming the good news. Yet when He looked upon the crowds, “He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” His compassion didn’t end with emotion, it birthed a mission.

He turned to His disciples and said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest field.” In that moment, compassion became a calling.

This is the heart of Christ for the world today. He still sees the harassed and helpless, the lost and the weary. And He still calls His people to go, to be His hands and feet in places of need. Compassion is never meant to remain internal; it’s meant to propel us outward in obedience.

It is because of compassion that God trains us and sends us out. We are the instruments of His mercy. Every outreach, every act of service, every mission begins here, with a heart moved by compassion.

The Gospel itself is the compassion of God in action. It’s the story of a God who saw us in our helplessness and came to rescue us through His Son. When we live with compassion, we reflect the very nature of that Gospel.

Pray today that God would renew your heart for the lost, the poor, and the broken. Ask Him to make you a labourer in His harvest, someone who not only feels compassion but lives it.

Where is compassion calling you to go or serve? What would it look like for you to be an answer to Jesus’ prayer for labourers?

Prayer:
Lord of the harvest, fill me with Your compassion for the lost. Send me where You would have me go, and give me courage to obey. May my life reflect Your mercy to a world in need. Amen.
