Moved by Compassion - Learning to See as Jesus Sees

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2 – Moved by Compassion

Scripture: Matthew 14:13–14

Devotional:
When Jesus heard of John the Baptist’s death, He withdrew to a quiet place. He was grieving, worn, and in need of rest. Yet when the crowds followed Him, broken and desperate for help, He didn’t turn them away. “He saw a great crowd, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

Even in His own sorrow, Jesus was moved by the pain of others. Compassion overruled His exhaustion. This moment reminds us that compassion isn’t convenient; it often calls us to a love that will cost us dearly.

We see this pattern again and again in Jesus’ life. When He saw the sick, He healed them. When He saw the hungry, He fed them. When He saw the lost, He taught them. Jesus didn’t simply act out of duty, He acted from the Father’s heart. The miracles flowed not from a desire to prove His power, but from the overflow of divine compassion.

It’s easy to want God to move in power through our lives, yet forget that His power is released through love. We don’t see miracles because we crave the supernatural; we see them when we’re moved by compassion for the one in need.

If we’re to be like Jesus, we must learn to let our hearts be stirred again, to see people, not problems. Compassion pulls us out of self-focus and reminds us that ministry begins where love meets need.

Perhaps you’ve felt the nudge of compassion but hesitated because you felt too tired, too busy, or too hurt. Remember Jesus in this story. Compassion lifted Him above His grief and revealed the Father’s heart to the crowd. When we act out of compassion, the same Spirit that moved Jesus moves through us.

Reflection:
Where might compassion be calling you beyond your comfort today? Who is God asking you to see with His eyes?

Prayer:
Jesus, teach me to love as You loved. When I’m weary, renew my strength. When I see need, help me respond. Let compassion lead me to action, that Your love may be revealed through me. Amen.

About this Plan

Moved by Compassion - Learning to See as Jesus Sees

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus was often “moved with compassion.” His love was never passive, it led to action, healing, and transformation. In this five-day study, we’ll explore how compassion shaped Jesus’ ministry and how the Holy Spirit can awaken the same heart within us. Discover what it means to put on compassion, to be led by the Spirit, and to become God’s hands and heart to a broken world.
