The Spirit Promised to the Church

DAY 12 OF 14

The Holy Spirit is with us, in us, and upon us!

To us, another promise is given: “The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” — John 14:17.

This was what Ezekiel prophesied: “And I will put My Spirit within you” — Ezekiel 36:27. It is the Holy Spirit in us!

But there is another, different promise; the Holy Spirit upon us! This was Moses’ desire in Numbers 11:29 and the promise of Jesus in Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

When my mother died many years ago, my father was very sad as they had been married for 66 years. We were invited to preach during Canada’s revival, so we decided to take my father with us — and it was there that he understood what we preached for years about the Spirit. My father was able to grasp the certainty that he would never be alone.

This is what happens to us many times: we receive the Word in our minds, and maybe we write it down in a notebook, but the time comes when those words must move into our hearts — because that’s when they become powerful in our lives. God promised it; He said we would never feel like orphans again, that His Spirit would be with us, in us, and upon us.

This is a promise and a blessing for us believers. The Holy Spirit is with us, within us, and upon us!

About this Plan

The Spirit Promised to the Church

Today we can say that the Church of Jesus Christ is of one mind regarding the Holy Spirit; we all know that He is God. Throughout this Bible study plan, we will learn a little more about the person of the Holy Spirit, His attributes, and His mission while answering three questions: If the Holy Spirit is God, why don't you worship Him as God? If the Holy Spirit is a person, why don't you speak to Him? If the Holy Spirit is the leader of the church, where have you placed Him?
