When You See Jesus Face to Face

Have you imagined what it will be like when you meet Jesus face to face? Jesus’s conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well gives us a glimpse of the joy that will eclipse our pain and our questions when we finally come into His presence.

Having had five husbands and now living with a man she wasn’t married to, this woman likely struggled with shame and isolation. She came to draw water during the hottest part of the day, presumably so she wouldn’t run into any of the respectable women in town. She was also a woman of faith, confident that the coming Messiah would reveal the answers to the questions that God’s worshippers had carried for millennia. She was a woman just like us, broken and longing; the only answer to the questions of her heart could not be found in an ordinary man, in works, or in community, but in the Messiah, Jesus.

When Jesus revealed who He was, her countenance and life were transformed. The pain, the loneliness, and the shame were eclipsed when she came face to face with the long-awaited Messiah. The answer to all her questions was Him. Overcome with joy, she left her water jar where it was, ran to the city, and told everyone about Jesus.

You may feel as broken as the woman at the well, seeking to understand the painful questions and mysteries of this life. Although Jesus has been revealed to us, we still live in a broken world, and though we know the truth, we don’t always feel it. One day, we will feel the truth as clearly as we know it. If you are a follower of Jesus, you can look forward to your own face-to-face encounter with the Messiah, when all your questions will be answered in Him, and you discover the joyful clarity of His presence. The best is yet to come.

Pray: Jesus, I can’t wait for the day when I see You face to face. Thank You for revealing Yourself to me, for saving me from my sins, for giving me hope and an eternal future with You. During my days on earth, may I trust that one day, my faith will become sight, and the sight of You will answer every question, every heartbreak, and every longing.
