What Is My Calling?

DAY 2 OF 12

Called to be saints

“… to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours.” (1 Corinthians 1:2 ESV)

When the apostle Paul wrote to believers in Rome and Corinth, he addressed them as “those called to be saints.” The above Bible verse shows that this calling was not limited to the people in those cities as though a special group of believers. Paul also writes to “all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” In other words, the calling to be saints applies to every Christian worldwide.

The word ‘saint’ sounds rather archaic; a saint seems to fit better in an orthodox church building than in an office, classroom or construction site. Yet, Paul was talking about ordinary people living their daily lives. Maybe the concept becomes clearer in the EASY translation, which writes “God has chosen you to be His own people.” The CJB translation writes about “those… who have been set apart for Him.” That’s what it means to be a ‘saint’.

How can we become saints? By being “sanctified in Christ Jesus.” Our unity with Him sets us apart from the world around us that rejects Him. So, the calling to be saints comes down to consciously confirming our position as children of God and staying away from anything that could harm our relationship with Him.

Do you identify as a saint? What does that mean to you?

About this Plan

What Is My Calling?

Christians often talk about their ‘calling’ as an assignment they have received from God, for example to go into missions. They want to serve the Lord by committing themselves to His Kingdom. Hearing this can make you wonder: What actually is my calling? What does God want me to do? This reading plan gives you answers from the Bible.
