What Is My Calling?

DAY 12 OF 12

Serving God in the circumstances in which He has called you

“Let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.” (1 Corinthians 7:17 ESV)

Paul was called to completely change the course of his life so that he could pass on the message of God's love to people who had never heard about it. Some of Jesus' followers had to give up their profession as fishermen to become His disciples. But many more Christians serve God in the place and circumstances they already had when they came to faith.

To them Paul writes, “So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.” (1 Corinthians 7:24 ESV) Some of Paul’s audience were married, others were not. Some were free, others were slaves. Some had grown up as Jews and were thus circumcised, others had not. So, their situation was very different when they came to faith. But that didn't matter. They didn't need to change this in order to be good Christians. Their life circumstances did not determine their relationship with God, nor were the circumstances an obstacle to serving Him.

As believers, we all are encouraged to remain faithful to the Lord within our existing circumstances. Of course, our situation and position in life affects how precisely we can or cannot serve God. But this does not make our lives for Him better or worse than others’.

How can you serve God in your current position and circumstances?

About this Plan

What Is My Calling?

Christians often talk about their ‘calling’ as an assignment they have received from God, for example to go into missions. They want to serve the Lord by committing themselves to His Kingdom. Hearing this can make you wonder: What actually is my calling? What does God want me to do? This reading plan gives you answers from the Bible.
