What Is My Calling?

DAY 9 OF 12

Serving Jesus or listening to His words?

“And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to His teaching.” (Luke 10:39 ESV)

The Lord Jesus was often traveling the country with His followers. One day they were invited to be guests of two sisters, Martha and Mary. Hosting such a large group obviously brought a lot of work for these women. No wonder we read, “Martha was distracted with much serving.” All the more striking is that Mary was not helping her, but was just sitting down listening to Jesus. She seemed to be neglecting her duties. Annoyed, Martha asked Jesus, “Tell her to help me!”

Up to this point, I can follow the story well. I completely understand Martha's frustration. Surely Mary should roll up her sleeves and help her sister! After all, it was the Lord Jesus Himself who was their guest! He deserves outstanding service. But Jesus’ priorities lie elsewhere. He replies, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42 ESV)

Martha was busy doing useful things. But this distracted her from listening to Jesus' words. And Jesus did not approve of that.

This is a lesson I need to take to heart again and again. “Serving God” is good, but spending time with Him is even more important!

How is this evident in your life?

About this Plan

What Is My Calling?

Christians often talk about their ‘calling’ as an assignment they have received from God, for example to go into missions. They want to serve the Lord by committing themselves to His Kingdom. Hearing this can make you wonder: What actually is my calling? What does God want me to do? This reading plan gives you answers from the Bible.
