Every Hour I Need You: 7 Meditations for Moms on the Character of God

DAY 6 OF 7

God Is Unchangeable

Also known as his immutability, God’s unchangeable nature means that God is always the same. As he declares, “For I the Lord do not change” (Malachi 3:6, ESV). The New Testament says that in our heavenly Father, there is “no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17, ESV), and “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8, ESV).

God never changes, and nothing and no one can or will cause him to change. He will never become more holy (to do so would suggest a deficiency in his present holiness), and he will never become less just, good, or true (if he did so, he would cease to be God). Since God doesn’t change, neither will his wisdom or power.

What difference does God’s unchangeable nature make to you and me? With constant changes happening at home, God’s sameness offers stability to believing moms. It means we can depend on God to be the same today—and to act in a way that’s consistent with his nature—just as he was in the past and will be in the future. We can trust him when . . .

A child climbs onto the school bus for the first time.

There’s an unexpected diagnosis.

A son or daughter begins dating.

It’s time to make a college or career decision.

A child moves out-of-state.

When the future looms uncertain, we trust our Lord will be the same tomorrow as we know him to be today. When our seasons of motherhood change, and everything feels new and unfamiliar, we expect God’s character to be constant, for him to accomplish his plans, and for him to keep his promises. He will still be with us, his help will still be available, and his grace will still be sufficient.

Perhaps most precious is our heavenly Father’s unchanging love for his daughters: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases” (Lamentations 3:22, ESV). When trials come, God’s affection for and disposition toward us is sure. We’re secure in his love even as we pray for him to move in our circumstances.

Here’s some more encouraging news. While he stays the same, the Lord works wonderful changes in us: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself . . .” (2 Corinthians 5:17–18, ESV).

Reflection Questions:

1. How does God’s unchangeable nature offer you stability?

2. In your current season, what change does God want to work in you?
