Every Hour I Need You: 7 Meditations for Moms on the Character of God

DAY 4 OF 7

God Is Everywhere

The theological term “omnipresent” literally means that God is “everywhere present.” God is everywhere, all the time, and he doesn’t miss a thing. King David proclaimed, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7, ESV; see also Jeremiah 23:23–24). Then he continued, ruling out different possibilities.

Heaven? God’s there.

Sheol (or the grave)? Nope, he’s there too.

Even if you were to fly to the sunrise or dive to the bottom of the ocean, the Lord is present. You don’t have to invite him to show up; he entered the room before you did.

Said another way, there’s nowhere God isn’t. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3, ESV). That means he’s with our children, even when we’re not present—when they go to school, get that first job, or serve on the mission field.

Not only is God everywhere in a general way, but through his Holy Spirit, he is with his people in a particular way (John 14:16-17), and this fact is a glorious comfort to the Christian mom. Wherever we are, whether standing in front of our kitchen sinks or sitting in rush hour traffic, God is with us.

And the Lord who is everywhere also sees everything. Just as he saw Hagar in the wilderness, God sees you in your trials and confusion (Gen. 16:13). He notices your sacrifice, just as Jesus observed the poor widow offering two copper coins—all she had to live on (Mark 12:42–44).

Knowing God is with us, we don’t have to be afraid:

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10, ESV). When we’re lonely—new to the neighborhood or new at church and struggling to make friends—God’s presence with us means we’re never alone. Jesus makes that certain when he promises his followers, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20, ESV).

Finally, God’s presence everywhere assures us that whenever and however we serve our children for his glory, our work is eternally meaningful. Our ever-present Lord sees and rewards all that’s done for him: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23–24, ESV).

Reflection Questions:

1. Does God seem distant? If so, ask him to help you believe what he reveals about himself in his word and open your spiritual eyes to see evidence of his presence in your life.

2. How does God’s presence comfort and convict you?
