Every Hour I Need You: 7 Meditations for Moms on the Character of God

DAY 5 OF 7

God Is Eternal

“I am the Alpha and the Omega . . . who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelations 1:8, ESV). Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and omega is the last, so God is the beginning (the start) and end (the goal) of all created things. He is the eternal one, and he is the Almighty.

God’s eternal nature is mind-boggling. Outside time, God doesn’t set alarms, depend on calendars, or strive to meet deadlines. Never early and never late, never in a hurry and always available, his actions are always perfectly ordered in time—even when they don’t make sense to us (see John 11:1–44). When we’re tempted to think that God is slow in keeping his promises, we remember that “with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8, ESV).

In contrast, we’re time-bound. “The years of our life are seventy, / or even by reason of strength eighty; / . . . they are soon gone, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10, ESV). Nevertheless, God “put eternity into [our hearts]” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, ESV). Though we live in a fallen world, we were made for another existence—one without end. Thankfully, Jesus entered our twenty-four-hour day, “abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10, ESV).

With hope we pray, “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12, ESV). Our clocks are ticking, and our time with our children is limited. We remember Paul’s counsel: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time” (Ephesians 5:15–16, ESV).

So what is the best use of our time? What is worth it?

The Lord is eternal, before whom we will one day give an account, and human souls have an eternal destiny—in heaven or hell. Therefore living for the Lord, “holy and acceptable” (Romans 12:1) to him who is most worthy, and spending our days serving the eternal souls he entrusts to our care, is of immeasurable value and worth.

Sisters, all your wakeful nights, meal preparation, homework support, and drives to appointments are worth it. Getting your children out the door to church on Sunday mornings, reading Bible stories, and praying with them before bed are worth it. Each minute you invest and each ounce of energy you expend in loving and caring for your children’s bodies and souls, for God’s glory, is worth it.

Christian motherhood is good work. It’s important work. It matters—for eternity. And it is truly worth it.

Reflection Questions:

1. What difference does God’s eternality make in your next 24 hours?

2. Do you feel like you’ve lost time or long for a fresh start? Ask God to “restore to you the years” that have been lost (Joel 2:25), and take heart: “The eternal God is your dwelling place, / and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27, ESV).
