Simeon was waiting on the Messiah. Scripture says that he was “righteous and devout” (Luke 2:25) and that it had been “revealed to him by the Holy Spirit” (Luke 2:26) that he wouldn’t die before he saw Jesus. Chances are, Simeon spent lots of time with God . . . that’s often how you hear from the Spirit. And he heard the Spirit so clearly that He directed him to the Temple courts. The Spirit told Simeon to wait for the Messiah, and then the Spirit told Simeon to go to the Temple at the exact right time. Simeon’s life was directed by the Spirit.

Scripture says, “the Holy Spirit was on him” (Luke 2:25). As a follower of Jesus, the Spirit is on you too! But unlike Simeon, the Spirit is in you. (Before Jesus’ Death and Resurrection, the Spirit could not live inside us.) That means that you are not going through life alone. You can get moment-by-moment directions from the Spirit of God.
