Brave Partners (David & Abishai)

Abishai was one of three sons of David’s sister Zeruiah. (See 1 Chronicles 2:16.) His brothers were Asahel and Joab, two of David’s mighty men. Second Samuel 23:19 tells us: “Abishai was the most famous of the Thirty and was their commander” (NLT).This brave partner of David would eventually become the leader of David’s special forces and one of the most accomplished warriors in Israel. Your ability to partner with others will largely determine your potential. This is true no matter how gifted you are.

Moments such as the one in 1 Samuel 26 between David and Abishai are where partnerships are birthed. Partners are not recruited by you; they are raised up for you. Brave partners watch and wait for the season they are needed—even if they don’t realize it. Someone is waiting for you right now! They may not be on your radar, but they are on God’s. He knows how to connect you with your Abishai. The partners God is calling to you will be like the merging of strong forces—like two magnets that cannot be pulled apart. Strengths and weaknesses will be complemented, and visions will be fulfilled. Every man, no matter how gifted he is, needs an Abishai.

Abishai had witnessed David’s leadership and could see the anointing on his life. He knew that David was supposed to be king. He was devoted to his giant-killing friend (and uncle) and was a part of his small elite fighting force. But it was these brave sacrificial moments that made him stand out. He rose through the ranks by doing things no one else would do.

What I love about Abishai is how he came into his calling by helping someone else fulfill his. It takes bravery to chase your own lofty goals, but it takes even greater courage to throw in with someone else’s extreme ambitions—to trust another’s dream. You may know your motives and logic, but how can you know these things in someone else? You may know your heart, but can you trust theirs? Brave partnerships require outstanding audacity, and Abishai had this in abundance.

If you have a significant dream, you will need a partner. If your power and resources can accomplish your dream, it is a small dream indeed. God always calls us to things that are bigger than ourselves. In this, there is faith and extreme dependence on Him. But there is also an undeniable need for others. Your purpose demands partners. If you live on mission for Jesus, brave partners will be one of the greatest weapons in your arsenal. They will be the catalysts that maximize every gift you have been given.
