Why Jesus? Because He Paid the Price

Good Friday is both a day of deep sorrow and incredible victory. It is the day Jesus took our place, bearing the punishment we deserved so that we could be free. Romans 5:8 captures this incredible truth: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Before we even knew we needed saving, before we could do anything to earn His love, Jesus willingly went to the Cross for us.

The events of that day, recorded in Mark 15, show the depth of Jesus’ suffering. He was dragged before a mock trial, standing innocent yet remaining silent as accusations were hurled at Him. The same crowd that had welcomed Him with palm branches only days earlier now screamed for His crucifixion. Rejected, humiliated, and beaten, the King of Kings was handed over to be killed. The Roman soldiers mocked Him, forcing a crown of thorns onto His head. They spat on Him, struck Him, and stripped Him of dignity. And yet, Jesus did not fight back. He did not defend Himself. He endured it all, knowing that His suffering would bring us salvation.

As He was nailed to the Cross, the weight of the world’s sin was placed upon Him. He experienced agony beyond what we can comprehend. Yet, with His final breath, He declared, “It is finished.” At that moment, the temple curtain tore in two, signifying that the barrier between God and humanity had been removed. The sacrifice was complete. The debt was paid in full.

Jesus did not deserve death. He lived a sinless life, yet He chose to take our place. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Because of Good Friday, sin no longer has power over us. The price has been paid. We are no longer bound by our past, our mistakes, or our failures. We are free.

Take a moment today to reflect on the Cross. What does it mean to you that Jesus willingly suffered in your place? Thank Him for the price He paid. If there is any sin or burden you are carrying, lay it at His feet. He has already paid for it.
