Within the church, all should have “unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8). That way, believers can support each other and share each other’s burdens. After all, we are like members of a body: if one member suffers, all suffer together (see 1 Corinthians 12)! It is good to show brotherly love by sympathizing with our ‘brothers and sisters’ in Christ, in good times as well as in bad. We don’t always have a solution for the problems of others and we can’t remove their grief. But as believers, we can comfort people by sharing “the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” That goes further than friendly words or loving attention. It really helps the other by directing his or her attention to the Lord, Who is “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). He can really help!
