Men selv om menneskene visste at Gud fantes, har de ikke behandlet Ham som Gud. De har ikke bedt til Ham, slik de burde. De har heller ikke vist Ham takknemlighet for livet. I stedet har de fylt tilværelsen med tomme tanker, og i sin dumhet har de latt hjertene sine leve i mørket. Mens de gjorde krav på å bli sett på som smarte, var de i virkeligheten det motsatte, og i stedet for å tilbe Gud i all sin skjønnhet og herlighet, tilba de avguder lagd av menneskehender.
