God tells the Israelites to not create idols for themselves. To the Israelites, idols were things that they made out of gold and other materials and then worshipped those things. They even made a cow out of gold and started to worship it! We all struggle with idols - which to us are things that we want to make the most important in our lives. Sometimes the idols we want to make most important in our lives are good things - like a job, or someone we love, or a dream we have. It is important to remember that we are created to enjoy everything God has created and we can certainly love those things very much! But when they become more important to us than following God, they become an idol.
