Prayer shouldn't be seen as a last resort to try when all else fails. Prayer should come first. If you're new to prayer, don't be discouraged if you're not sure how to pray. Prayer is a skill, and it takes time to develop. Remember, prayer is communication with the almighty God, so pray respectfully and admiringly.

Prayer doesn't have to be long and drawn out. God delights when you simply say, "Lord, I love you." This is called adoration. Confess your sins to Him in your prayer life. This is called confession. Tell God what you're grateful for in your life and the world around you; be thankful. Pray for the needs of others and yourself. This is called supplication. 

Before you know it, you'll become devoted to prayer and won't know how you could have gone through the day without having had a conversation with God. One last thing: Pray expectantly; keep your eyes open to watch for God's answers.
