Speech and Maturity

Proverbs 10:8, 14, 17, 19
“The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.”

One of the marks of spiritual maturity is self-control in speech. The heart overflows through our speech. With spiritual maturity comes a surrendered, yielded heart full of love. Our words are sometimes a distraction from listening to God and to others. With maturity comes grace to listen before we speak. The quickness of our reply, the amount of words we use throughout the day and the care with which we speak, are all areas of attention for a disciple of Christ. We are in a process of growing into maturity if the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives. Our speech indicates where we are on that journey.

Lord Jesus, you are at work in my heart. I pray for your grace, self-control and love to mark my listening and my speech this day.
