Love and Faithfulness

2 Samuel 9:1
“…‘Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?’”

David’s life was motivated by love and faithfulness, not by revenge and bitterness. The family of Saul had opposed and hunted him. Now God had finally vindicated David and given him the kingdom. When we hold authority, our motives are often expressed with limited constraints. David had both the freedom and the right to take revenge on Saul’s family; however, he expressed kindness and faithfulness to his covenant with Jonathan instead.

To whom is God calling us to show kindness?

What friends, covenants, or commitments are we being called to honor, regardless of the cost?
David’s leadership was motivated by love and faithfulness. When we lead that way, we establish a culture of love and faithfulness for those we are leading. Cultures are transformed, not by words, but by actions. For many years to come Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, and crippled from a young age, had a place of honor at David’s table. It was a permanent, ongoing reminder to everyone who served with David that love and faithfulness were expected.

Lord God, I pray for love and faithfulness to mark my life, my covenants, my family and those I lead, for your glory.
