The Just Judge
1 Lord, God of vengeance —
God of vengeance, shine! # 94:1 2Sm 22:48; Ps 18:47–48; Jr 46:10
2Rise up, Judge of the earth;
repay the proud what they deserve. # 94:2 Ps 7:6; 28:4; 98:9
3 Lord, how long will the wicked —
how long will the wicked celebrate? # 94:3 Ps 74:10; Rv 6:10
4They pour out arrogant words;
all the evildoers boast. # 94:4 1Sm 2:3; Ps 31:18
5 Lord, they crush your people;
they oppress your heritage. # 94:5 Is 3:15
6They kill the widow and the resident alien
and murder the fatherless. # 94:6 Dt 27:19; Is 10:2
7They say, “The Lord doesn’t see it.
The God of Jacob doesn’t pay attention.” # 94:7 Jb 22:13; Ps 10:11
8Pay attention, you stupid people!
Fools, when will you be wise? # 94:8 Ps 92:6
9Can the one who shaped the ear not hear,
the one who formed the eye not see? # 94:9 Ex 4:11; Pr 20:12
10The one who instructs nations,
the one who teaches mankind knowledge —
does he not discipline? # 94:10 Jb 35:11; Is 28:26
11The Lord knows the thoughts of mankind;
they are futile. # 94:11 Ps 139:2; Is 66:18; 1Co 3:20
12 Lord, how happy is anyone you discipline
and teach from your law # 94:12 Ps 25:5,9; 71:17; Is 48:17; Heb 12:7
13to give him relief from troubled times
until a pit is dug for the wicked. # 94:13 Ps 7:15; 9:15; Pr 26:27
14The Lord will not leave his people
or abandon his heritage, # 94:14 1Sm 12:22; Rm 11:2
15for the administration of justice will again be righteous,
and all the upright in heart will follow # 94:15 Or heart will support; lit heart after it. # 94:15 Ps 36:10; 64:10; 97:11
16Who stands up for me against the wicked?
Who takes a stand for me against evildoers? # 94:16 Ps 59:2
17If the Lord had not been my helper,
I would soon rest in the silence of death. # 94:17 Ps 115:17; 124:1–2
18If I say, “My foot is slipping,”
your faithful love will support me, Lord. # 94:18 Ps 18:35; 66:9; 121:3
19When I am filled with cares,
your comfort brings me joy. # 94:19 Is 57:18; 66:13
20Can a corrupt throne be your ally,
a throne that makes evil laws? # 94:20 Ps 50:16; 58:2
21They band together against the life of the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death. # 94:21 2Kg 21:16; Ps 106:38; Jr 26:15
22But the Lord is my refuge;
my God is the rock of my protection. # 94:22 2Sm 22:3; Ps 46:1,7; 62:2,6
23He will pay them back for their sins
and destroy them for their evil.
The Lord our God will destroy them. # 94:23 Ps 73:27; 94:23; 101:5,8
