Our God Reigns - 1 + 2 Kings

1 diena iš 31

The books of 1 and 2 Kings record Israel’s prolonged struggle between true and false worship, and were originally written as one book. From the reign of King Solomon until the exile to Babylon—a period of nearly 400 years—the prophets of God clashed with the kings of Israel and Judah regarding their idolatrous behaviour. Since God’s predictions about exile were eventually fulfilled, the prophets proved to have the last word over those kings who followed other gods. In this way the Lord showed Himself superior over all other spiritual powers, including the false gods that so many of Israel’s faithless kings followed. These books are rich in history and doctrine, and they provide background and context for a significant portion of the Old Testament. It has been said that 1 Kings was written to record history, but more importantly, to teach the lessons of history. Amid the chorus of idols beckoning for the attention of God’s people both in ancient times and today, only the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ reigns supreme and deserves our trust. To further understand the context of 1 & 2 Kings, watch this short video by the Bible Project below. It will help to give you a deeper understanding of what is happening in this book of the Bible. Over the course of this bible study, we’ll memorise several scriptures from 1 & 2 Kings. Today we are memorising 1 Kings 2:4 “and that the Lord may keep His promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’” (NIV)
