Heartfelt Repentance
Remember the depth of David’s sin with Bathsheba and his gross attempt to cover it up with the murder of her husband Uriah? As a wealthy king, David could offer thousands of oxen or sheep or goats on the altar before God. But there weren’t enough animals in the world to compensate for his sin. It was David’s heart that had been closed to the will of God. It was David’s heart that had to break in repentance.
The sacrifice God really wants is a broken heart. Ultimately, it’s not the sight of an animal sacrifice that moves God to grant forgiveness. It’s a broken heart—a spirit grown tender enough to be pained by sin.
