Often at restaurants, servers will warn you if a plate is really hot, so that you will avoid touching it. This makes complete sense. Likewise, if you touch the fiery hot handle of a skillet on the stove, you will immediately jerk your hand away. No, I promise, this is not a kitchen safety 101. In our thought life, we often do the opposite. We will often “touch” or experience an unproductive or “hot thought,” but then refuse to let it go or put it down. Sometimes we even pick up the hot thought over and over again, even though we know it’s not helpful. There is a better way!
