It would have been enough

Are you grateful?

In this episode of The Chosen, the disciples recount reasons for gratitude. They remember God’s faithfulness throughout their history—His deliverance, provision, protection—and respond together: “If it had only been that, it would have been enough.”

But the list continues. Another gift follows. And another. Gratitude grows as they recognize how much God has done.

Scripture calls for this kind of life. Give thanks in all circumstances. Be devoted to prayer with thanksgiving. Gratitude is not occasional; it is meant to shape daily life.

Simple practices can help form this habit. Naming what you are thankful for—out loud or in writing—trains your attention. It helps you recognize what God is already doing.

Over time, this changes your perspective. Instead of focusing only on what is missing, you begin to see what has been given. God’s care becomes more visible.

In the episode, the women offer their own words of gratitude to Jesus. While the men’s gratitude was more rooted in tradition, the women’s flowed straight from their hearts—from their personal experiences with Jesus. Both lists are beautiful; both acknowledge God for who He is and what He does.

One moment stands out in this episode. When the disciples reach the end of the dayenu, “Big James” adds something: “If He had built for us a holy temple and not sent the Messiah in our lifetimes … It would have been enough. We would have waited. But you chose us. You chose now. And it is enough.”

Pause there for a moment.

Reflect on how much of a privilege it is that you get to know the Messiah. That He is present, that He speaks, that He welcomes you. Turn toward Him. Trust Him. Walk with Him.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you grateful? How can you tell? How can others tell?
  • What helps you pay attention to God’s goodness and generosity towards you?
  • How do you respond to who God is, not just what He gives?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for everything You give. Thank you also for who You are. Thank You for coming near through the gift of Your Son. Help me recognize Your work in my life and respond with gratitude each day. Amen.
