Still Do Miracles

Matthew shares the story of two of Jesus’ miracles occurring at roughly the same time. Jarius, an influential Jewish leader, came to Jesus pleading for him to bring his recently deceased daughter back to life. In the midst of Jarius’ broken-hearted plea, an outcast woman with a twelve-year issue of continuous bleeding approaches Jesus. Her hope is to simply touch the hem of his garment.

This man and woman came to Jesus from two very different positions in life. They journeyed two different paths to find Jesus that day. They brought requests for two very different needs. Yet they both came to him expecting a miracle. It was in their expectancy that Jesus blessed them each with the miracle they longed to see unfold in their lives.

Jesus may not be physically walking the earth for us to fall at his feet in the desperation of our own requests. However, the miracles he poured out while he walked this earth are still accessible. Jesus is still in the business of doing miracles in our lives today.

As parents, our children's pain becomes our own. My 7-year-old son has carried deep set anxiety around school within him since he started preschool. The anxiety of school consumes our lives from the last flutter in his eyes before he falls asleep to his first stretch in the morning. As summer rounded out and a new year approached, we were actively praying over the start of a new year. The night before his first day of school, I stepped away from my son for a few moments to tend to something. Then as we laid in bed, I mentally prepared myself for the nightly battle of anxiety that was about to ensue. My phone started buzzing and paused my own train of thought. I started reading texts from friends and family, assuring me that prayers were being offered. As I read them, I noticed they were not unprompted. I scrolled back through my phone to see that, when I had stepped out of the room, my son grabbed my phone and texted "Please pray for me" to all sorts of people. I asked him if he had sent the texts, and he said, "Yes, we need a lot of prayer for school to be better". This was his version of running to Jesus in search of his own miracle.

No matter how you are approaching Jesus, his power remains available. You may be racing to him in desperation as Jarius did. Maybe you're crawling to him in pain like the woman with the issue of blood. You might be crying out to him during a hike the day your divorce is finalized. He could meet you lying in bed in the midst of a mental health crisis. And he might even find you while you're texting a prayer request on the floor of your mom's bedroom. Whatever path you've found yourself on, Jesus is there. No matter how helpless or hopeless your situation feels, Jesus is standing in the middle of your path waiting for you to believe, receive, and declare the miracle he is capable of releasing over your life. We need to believe that he can still do miracles and know that he will do miracles!

Prayer:

Lord, your miracle power is still available to me today, in this space, exactly as I am. Help my unbelief. I want my faith to grow deeper and my love for you to grow stronger. Meet my expectant heart with the miracle it longs for. All my hope is in you! In your matchless name, Amen.
