I’ve never felt more anxious than when I was $35,000 in debt at 19 years old. It controlled my life. That amount of debt at that age was all-consuming. I couldn’t focus on my faith, my family, or my friends because I was too busy dodging calls from creditors. The pressure that I felt was real, and though I prayed to God every single day to help change my situation, the reality was I hadn’t learned the lesson yet. Exodus 20:3 states: “ You shall have no other gods before me. ” Without realizing it, not only had I placed money, instant gratification, and status above what matters most; but I’d also positioned myself as a slave of the lender. We as children of Christ are meant for so much more than that. You see, nothing happens by accident. I encourage all of you to see this as a sign to evaluate your priorities and place freedom–real freedom–at the top of the list. The type of freedom that can only come from our Almighty Father. Have you deprioritized your relationship with the Creator and put money or material possessions above what matters most? How can you get back to solid ground?
